ANJALI MEHROTRA

Anjali Mehrotra serves on the Board of Directors of National Organization for Women (NOW) and is the founder of Equality, Period. NJ – an advocacy coalition focused on menstrual equity for all. In 2023 she joined the Executive Board of American Association of University Women (AAUW) of New Jersey as Vice President of Communications and Director of Public Policy. Anjali also serves on the Board of Trustees of Union College of Union County, NJ. In May 2022, she was appointed by Governor Phil Murphy to the New Jersey Asian American and Pacific Islander Commission and to the New Jersey-India Commission in 2024. In 2021, she was the Democratic candidate for the New Jersey General Assembly to represent Legislative District 21. In 2023, Anjali was honored to receive the Woman as Agent of Change award from AAUW NJ and be recognized as a Menstrual Equity Champion by two national advocacy organizations Period. Inc and Period Law.

Anjali was born and raised in Calcutta, India. She came to New Jersey to pursue higher education and received a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Science from Stevens Institute of Technology in the field of Computer Science. After seven years as a software consultant, she obtained her Certification in Digital Design from Parsons School of Design and started her own freelance design business.

Anjali worked on campaigns for Democratic Women candidates for President, Congress and State Assembly before running herself for the office of Borough Council Member in 2018. She is the elected Municipal Chair for the Mountainside Democratic Committee. Anjali is a founding cabinet member for the newly relaunched Emerge NJ, an organization that trains Democratic women to run for office.

Anjali earned her certification in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University and serves on the Union County Advisory Board on the Status of Minorities. To raise awareness regarding period poverty and stigma, in 2020 Anjali founded the first statewide coalition working to achieve menstrual equity that was instrumental in passing legislation to provide free menstrual products in NJ public schools. In addition, she serves as a Sisters on the Planet Ambassador for Oxfam America, a global organization that works to end the injustice of poverty and inequality.

Through her experiences, Anjali strongly identifies as a feminist. In all her roles she is a fierce advocate for women of all ethnic backgrounds across the socio-economic spectrum. She is proud to be a leading voice for women’s rights in New Jersey who is frequently sought as a thought leader by New Jersey publications and is featured as a feminist political and policy columnist at Insider NJ.
